Authentic Arabic Street Food Near You
Welcome to Yafa Café, Winnipeg’s home for authentic, homestyle Palestinian cooking. Family-run since 2017 and located at 1785 Portage Ave — right between Polo Park and Assiniboine Park — we serve fully halal Middle Eastern food made from scratch with Manitoba-sourced meat, locally sourced produce, and spices we dry and grind in house. Come in for Msakhan, shawarma, falafel and Knafeh Nabulsi, or get Palestinian food delivered anywhere in Winnipeg.
Yafa Café opened in November 2017 to bring the generous hospitality of Palestinian street food to Winnipeg. The idea grew out of family-run food carts and corner markets around Broadway and the Winnipeg Farmers’ Market, and the café was opened in tribute to our mothers’ and grandmothers’ cooking. Today we are one of the city’s most-loved halal restaurants, known for an “Arabic fusion” menu that gives a Middle Eastern twist to familiar Canadian favourites.
Everything is prepared fresh in our kitchen: bread baked to order, chicken marinated in sumac, and spices dried and ground in house for maximum flavour. Our dining room is decorated with warm Arabic pop culture and historical décor, seats families comfortably, adds outdoor seating in summer, and hosts live music from time to time.
You will find us on the north side of Portage Avenue, a short drive from CF Polo Park, Assiniboine Park and Zoo, Assiniboia Downs, the Winnipeg West End and St. James. That makes Yafa Café an easy stop for a post-shopping lunch, a weekend brunch of manakeesh and Arabic coffee, a family dinner, or a late-night shawarma run — we serve until 11:00 PM every night of the week.
From our national dish to the desserts people drive across Winnipeg for, these are the plates our regulars recommend first.
Sumac-heavy roasted chicken with slow-caramelized onions served over fresh baked bread. If you have been searching for authentic Msakhan in Winnipeg, we prepare it four ways: classic Msakhan, Msakhan rolls, Fatteh Msakhan and Manakeesh Msakhan, plus a shareable Msakhan Feast.
Halal chicken shawarma carved fresh, wrapped with garlic sauce and pickles or plated with rice, salad and dips. It is the most-ordered item for shawarma delivery in the West End, St. James and Polo Park.
The classic Palestinian “upside-down” rice dish layered with spiced meat and roasted vegetables, then flipped at the table. Comfort food that tastes like a Friday family lunch in Yafa.
Crisp, herb-packed falafel with hummus, mutabbal and fresh salads — some of the best falafel on Portage Avenue and a favourite with vegan and vegetarian guests looking for plant-based Middle Eastern food in Winnipeg.
Stone-baked Arabic flatbread topped with wild thyme zaatar, olive oil and melted cheese. Order it with mint lemonade or Arabic coffee for a proper Winnipeg brunch.
Warm shredded pastry over stretchy sweet cheese, soaked in syrup and finished with pistachio. Widely called the best kunafa dessert near Polo Park — and the reason many guests come back the same week.
